If you haven't heard the latest single from In The Variant, then let us be among the first to introduce you as the band just dropped a banger of a track that blends alternative rock with powerful and soulful vocals that add layers and layers of lusciousness to the song and soundscape and the entire thing breeds a very unique atmosphere that you end up falling right into and never want to leave once you're there.
"If Looks Could Kill" is not afraid to get a bit heavy and it certainly does go there when the timing is right, but it also bears this very unique distortion and sounds almost like the guitar tone has an octavizer effect to it.
This effect makes the riffs just sound outstanding and very unique so you have this almost colorful and melodic vibrancy to the track along with the heavy and edgy tonality of the entire thing as well.
This combination works so well for this track because it's got a great Rhythm to it that adds to that deep, in the pocket style heaviness and the energy across the board is just ridiculous the entire time.
This is one of those tracks that feels like it was recorded live because everyone has this incredible energy and feels as if they are actually feeding off of each other the whole time.
It definitely makes you want to go see them live at least because if this kind of energy is captured on record so well then seeing them live just must be outstanding.
Again, I can't express enough how sonically driving and unique this track comes through and it does actually combine a very heavy alternative rock but also hints at metal and thrashes out when it wants to.
There are definitely some surprises around the corners and these guys most certainly know exactly what they're doing by arranging a track that hits really hard but still packs an extra punch in there.
As a matter of fact, this entire track it's like a sucker punch to the gut and I mean in the best way possible.
The drumming is hard-hitting, the guitar tones are ridiculous, the base lays in that thickness that adds a rumbling melody to everything, and the vocals really pack in such vivacious and sort of passionate layers of texture that everything just engulfs you.
This was a badass track and it's the sort of song that you listen to more than once especially right after you have heard it the first time. It has a way of making you want to just hit repeat right away.
It's got hooks, catchiness, heaviness, edginess, color, and most of all, this vocalist delivers character and her personality and presence as an artist shines across the board.
So, the whole track ends up swallowing you up in a good way. Not in a bad way. And you end up finding yourself looking deeper into the band which is something I certainly did myself. I'm glad this is what happened because upon trekking through their previous releases on Spotify I was able to really experience their evolution as a band starting from their first EP dropped in 2015.
From then till now, makes a huge difference and this single certainly speaks volumes for the band although I can tell you that there are a handful of singles released last year as well that really show different sides of how they do their thing and how they express their love for the craft of songwriting a little differently.
This is definitely a band to follow and I'm certainly going to be paying a lot more attention to In The Variant from here on out in hopes that 2025 will bring some new singles from these guys.
Their music is something that you can sing along with but also bang your head too at the same time and that's a unique combination that doesn't happen all the time.
I would listen to this track either loud or with headphones on so you can really soak in all the grooves and heaviness of it but also that unique Sonic approach and soundscape as well.
If you like this track, you are going to like a lot of their other stuff so definitely take a look at their Spotify as a whole so you can listen to more of their material after this.
See how this affects you because it's going to be something that anyone who loves heavy alternative rock, doom-rock, melodic metal, and anything that just has a cool, a little refreshing, and unique approach to heavy music will love.
