A wild new single from Gadfly just dropped today and it's a massive soiree of garage-toned rock with an inventive production bringing elements of classic grunge feedback, overlaying noise and guitar tones, and so much more which all makes it so rambunctious that you can't turn away from it.
"Shrink" is the latest release from the band and it doesn't waste a lot of time hitting hard. Again, this is a wild track and part of that aesthetic is the band's energy on this one. We are no strangers to Gadfly, and you can hear elements of doom, alternative rock, and plenty more sewn into the roots of their songs but they take a slightly different direction with this one.
These feels like you're in a small club watching a live performance and it's blowing your mind. There are all kinds of textures and layers throughout the track that keep it slightly out of control and sporadic, but I love that about it because it works with the aesthetic of the entire thing.
There's a riot rock undertone at times and the vocals have this sort of fuzzy distortion over them giving the song an added edginess and drive that lets everything feel cutting but still thick at the same time.
I do love the live performance feel of this one.
It's a very thriving track that incorporates a lot of that garage rock along with some of their classic staples but, it's the production and added layers of sonic soundscape that really let this track hit hard.
Now, when I say something like riot rock as I mentioned earlier, what I mean is bands like L7, 7-year bitch, and more like that. If you're unfamiliar with these kinds of bands, check them out because they were steppingstones and boundary-breakers back in the late 80s and early 90s.
These were female-fronted or, entirely female bands that pioneered this gritty, punchy, dirty, riot rock sound during that time.
I can hear plenty of that influence in this track especially. There's something about it that screams of the aesthetic, and I love feeling this kind of nostalgic essence when I listen to this song.
Again, we've heard stuff from this project before and it's always amazing. There's always something about it that reaches out and slaps you in the face. It's inventive and pulls in a slew of influences in heavy rock music always.
That's exactly what this song does, so the band sticks with those staples but brings in a bit more fuzz tone. A little bit more experimental.
The guitars are outstanding. They always are. The frontwoman crushes with attitude and this edgy Swagger which goes right along with the tonality of the entire song anyway.
A brilliant song that brings to mind several different bands and influences but rolled into one punchy and sort of, animated heavy garage rock banger, most certainly check out "Shrink" and do it loudly.
When you're done with that, check out the band's back catalog on Spotify because there's a ton of great stuff including full-length albums from 2024 and 2022 that are both outstanding.
There's a lot to soak in and it's all heavy, outside the box, a little while, and endlessly fun with some stuff that breaks boundaries ever so slightly, so you become addicted to it.
Check the stuff out right now.
