A Vast and Heavy Album from Dead Nancy

Writer's picture: R.A.G.R.A.G.

An album release from Dead Nancy delivers a wild and intense soundscape that comes through both vast and almost cinematic at times but is in the form of alternative rock and metal only created with fewer boundaries than you may be used to which makes it all the more enticing and the sonic drive of the whole record comes through who the power that you can't turn away from.

The Death Stories album has more than a few surprises around the corners and when you listen to the full album you can hear a range of influences that are embedded in the veins of this piece of work and a lot of it comes down to a late 90s and early 2000s alternative rock inspiration but it's much more expansive than you would think.

It's got inventive riffs and time signatures along with explosive choruses, and this robust sort of character that you end up getting attached to right from the get-go.

This is one of those albums that you need to listen to as a whole because if you only catch a few tracks from it then you're not really gaining the full spectrum of what it has to offer.

The songs fall into that metal and alternative rock soundscape but there's a lot more going on and there are layers to be peeled back throughout the records course.

This was like an escape and that's because the record can pull you away from your surroundings and put you in a different place all together and where it takes you is a semi-dark edge and almost gothic rock soiree that has a theme to it that creeps up on you and then wraps itself around you keeping you right where it wants to.

Along with inventive riffs and classic guitar tones, the record does indeed have that vastness that I mentioned earlier, and the vocals also add to that because they are performed for the most part, with a lot of soul and intensity which only adds another element of drive to the records already hard-hitting feel.

The balance between the vocals and the music adds a sort of emotional backbone and that is something that I found really addictive. This is because you feel like the songs are coming from some place real and that makes everything really authentic.

This record is definitely for people who love bands like Tool, Deftones, and just all these great '90s alt rock bands but it also blends in a lot more that you end up picking up on again, if you listen to the whole record.

This whole album was like a powerhouse, and it came through incredibly anthemic a lot of the time so there are parts of songs that end up bouncing around in your head for hours or even days after they have ended and the only way to satiate that is to go and listen to them again.

The other addictive element of this record is the sheer energy that they portray throughout it because it feels like some of it was even recorded live on the floor and the players are feeding off of each other the entire time.

I'm not sure if that's how they did it, but either way it makes you want to go see them live in your face simply because if this kind of energy is captured on record this well then seeing them live must be intense.

Check this record out once again, from beginning to end if possible and I'm sure you have the 50 minutes that it takes to do so because if you're into old rock and melodic metal, classic bands from the 90s, then this is absolutely 100% for you because this band nails that aesthetic.

Check this out when you can and don't be afraid to turn it nice and loud.
