A new single release from Checkerboard Floors comes through as an almost timeless and classic approach to indie rock by taking genuine classic rock influences and incorporating those songwriting styles to create a song that shines with character and shows that vintage aesthetic nearly perfectly.
"Hold Me Again" Bears a lot of heart and some beautiful instrumentation that's involved throughout the course of the track along with backing vocals that beckon 1950s doo-wop which fits perfectly with the tremolo effect on the guitars and the whole meaning behind the song also having that classic feel.
There are even little bells here and there during some of the choruses that bear that same tonality so these guys thought out how this track would get that 50s and early 60s vibe.
The track feels like something that you'd hear on a jukebox in a diner somewhere around 1962 that your girlfriend is in love with and wants to listen to non-Stop.
One of my favorite aspects about this track is this year fact that they were able to take that whole aesthetic and blend it into something a little bit newer with a little bit more polish to it which is outstanding.
This is the kind of thing that takes a lot of thought and attention to detail but also a real love for your craft and it's obviously clear that these guys have exactly that.
Upon listening to this single I had no choice but to do a little bit of a deep dive into the back catalog of checkerboard floors and upon doing so I was delighted because there are several singles along with an EP and a full-length album which each show different sides to the band's songwriting and personality.
One of my favorite things to do with a band like this is to kind of follow their set of releases so that you can also follow their evolution as a band.
The thing about "Hold Me Again" that gets you is that it's got character to it.
It lets you sort of picture things in your head and when you do, they all have that same aesthetic to them which is completely refreshing.
When I went listening to their other singles and tracks, I found that all of them actually have a certain kind of character to them which speaks volumes for how the band can create songs that you can attach yourself to.
This is kind of a rarity these days so when you come across it you want to hold on to it.
Each of these songs and releases ha something different to offer but that heart and the sense of adventure and experience is always there.
The energy level on this track is also amazing because it feels almost as if the players are feeding off of each other the entire time which lets the song sort of flow and breathe.
If I had to call this song one thing, it would be genuine.
This is definitely the kind of band to keep an eye out for because when they release something new you don't exactly know what to expect other than it's going to be good and alluring.
I would give this track an 8 out of 10 easily.
Definitely check this out when you get a chance and if you like this single then have a little swim through their back catalog on Spotify, it's more than worth your time.
