Alas de Liona

Writer: R.A.G.R.A.G.

Alas de Liona—and her striking brand of indie-pop—is rapidly ascending, following the September 2024 release of her ethereal, introspective and widely lauded album, Gravity of Gold which is rapidly gathering great praise, airplay, media and streaming. Including from the likes of Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, The Scotsman, BBC Radio Scotland, The Skinny, RTE, The Arts Desk, Fresh On The Net, God Is In The TV, Atwood Magazine, Noctis Magazine and Crack Magazine. The 11-track album marks a significant milestone in Alas’s musical journey. Produced by Rod Jones at Post Electric Studios in Leith. Alas also released in October, a bombastic Halloween single titled For Forever, in which a vampire broods on the drawbacks of immortality. For Forever is just one track from de Liona’s Vespertina, a musical screenplay project in the works. Hailing from a small town in the Mojave Desert, Alas de Liona’s path to musical discovery began in the heart of Scotland, where she moved to Edinburgh to complete her final year university studies. It was in Edinburgh that recognition for her talent for writing eloquent, introspective songs began to flourish. Free from the demands of academia, she embarked on her musical journey, and in 2021 during a Covid relaxation spell, she returned to Scotland and recorded her Radio Astronomy EP - a collection of space lullabies and cosmic folktales, also produced by Rod Jones at Post Electric. Working around UK visa restrictions, she made two further short returns visits in 2022, to make her Celtic Connections debut in January opening for Kathryn Joseph and Tinderbox at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, just as rules allowed a crowd to assemble again, then appearances at Edinburgh’s Hidden Door Festival and opening for Rufus Wainwright in Glasgow’s Summer Nights at Kelvingrove Bandstand and her first headline shows at Glasgow’s Glad Café and Edinburgh Voodoo Rooms. Summer 2023 saw Alas make a life changing move from the USA to live full time in Scotland after receiving a UK Global Talent work visa. She then appeared as a special guest alongside Hamish Hawk and Admiral Fallow at The Proclaimers Big Top Concerts in June at Kelso Showground, Edinburgh’s Leith Links and Glasgow Queen's Park. She also opened for Hamish Hawk at Galashiels MacArts, supported Travis at North Berwick’s Fringe by the Sea and opened for Callum Beattie and Sister Sledge at Party at the Palace in Linlithgow. Alas saw her first gig of 2024 on 1st January as a headline artist in Edinburgh’s First Footin’ Old Town Festival. She had a summer run of shows at Leith FAB Cricket Club, Glasgow Hug & Pint, Belladrum Festival and opening for Emeli Sandé at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Bandstand. September's album launch saw a full band show at Edinburgh Cabaret Voltaire and a trio performance in Glasgow at The Old Hairdresser's. She appeared last year at Belladrum festival and made her Irish debut to great acclaim performing at the legendary Ruby Sessions in Dublin in October. Further singles releases and live shows in 2025 announced shortly.
