A new EP release from Vanderlay brings out a very honest songwriting approach and because of that you were able to pull this character out of it, and this is something that's not only unique, but sort of infectious because you get attached to that personality and character throughout the course of this release and it's all done with a beautiful warmth and a lush array of instrumentation that all create an atmosphere for you to fall right into.
The Doubtful Sound EP is pretty big for an EP and it spans that classic six tracks but throughout those songs, you're getting pieces of the artist and this is what makes some of these songs compelling along with these gorgeous and sort of robust soundscapes that come through along with that one-on-one tonality that pulls you away from your surroundings and puts you into his world for a little while so it feels like you've just met with a friend that you haven't seen in a long time and had a great conversation.
That's the kind of warmth that it actually gives. It's like a familiar feeling and the more you listen to the record the more that feeling comes out and the more you want it.
This is a very rare kind of thing but it's something that I really adored about this release and how it was performed and arranged.
You can hear the different influences coming through as you go through the different songs from the classic folk songwriters to classic rock and loads in between but what you're getting out of it is not just a mixed bag, but more around have an EP that's beautifully confluent, has a forward moving flow, and has This brilliant authenticity to it.
There's plenty of acoustic guitar, piano, and live drums, some songs have an array of wind instruments and all these kinds of additional layers that bring different textures together and this is part of what creates this unique soundscape that you get and that atmosphere that I mentioned earlier.
I love the fact that even with a six-track EP like this one, there are still some surprises around the corner and sometimes he gets so descriptive with bringing out his inner thoughts and his truths that you can picture things in your head as you're listening.
This was an Amazing Escape and does indeed satiate that sense of story and exploration a little bit.
It's almost like reading a good book. You're getting good detail, and you know that it's coming from some place real, it can be descriptive musically this is gorgeous and the way that he even sings at times feels like it's just another instrument and so everything has this welcoming vibe.
At times I thought to myself that this might have been even cathartic for Caspar Cornick (Vanderlay) to write and release but for the listener, it can be very relatable and that's part of its warmth and welcome.
This was a very well-woven release with plenty of attention to detail but this free flow and natural underbelly that wraps itself around you and floats around in the air that surrounds you.
Take a swim through this EP when you can and do it with headphones on so you can really soak in everything that's happening throughout the songs and be taken to these places.
