A new EP release from Liam Canet Leiva delivers a set of lush soundscapes and tonalities featuring thick and layered textures of orchestrated instrumentation and soundscape brought together to create a robust atmosphere that breeds a heavily cinematic backbone and feels amazing.
The Forge is a record that features everything from uniquely approached electric guitar to piano, string sections, and plenty more but the reason it comes together so well is because of the composition and actual arrangement that these songs present.
A lot of these tracks have a kind of mood to them. Each one stands on its own two feet, but you can feel the connective tissue between the songs themselves making this a sort of concept record.
These are more like chapters of a book than just songs on a record. Maybe more like scenes of a film I should say.
You can still hear all these different layers of intensity come and go, float along with some of the soundscapes, or get engulfed by the entire thing, then eventually washed away with it as well.
The first and title track is an amazing introduction to the orchestral and cinematic vibes and aesthetic of the record as it comes in with these beautiful violin sections that layer melody and tone atop each other while percussion comes in and out bringing those hints of intensity.
As the song unfolds those intensities grow bigger and bigger and you get these wild and almost rambunctious haunts that come in. The melodies and notes used managed to make it feel both haunting and spirited at the same time.
This was a brilliant blend of melody between the notes and the instruments coming together. It's about the textures and tones of the instruments being played along with the melodies seamlessly melting into each other as the song unfolds.
This track alone was brilliant and pulled me into the atmosphere and aesthetic This record is delivering. Then you have songs like "Loner" which have much more of a noir kind of feel to them.
This track in particular is rooted in piano and has an air of mystery and sly underbelly. I love the way this feels because not only does it have those pianos, but it also has that trippy kind of guitar that comes in and out of it along with percussion that again, fades in and out at free will so, the thing about these songs is that they feel alive and breathing.
These are pieces of music, and they all have minds and temperaments of their own.
The beauty of music like this is that you can feel the mood in the tonality and melody, but your mind will go wherever it wants to.
I love stuff like this because it basically points you in the right direction and then it's up to your brain to take the next steps so, each person will Soak this in a little differently.
Music like this can be perceived by the listener in a particular way. It presents options that are amazing and also incredibly connective.
The orchestrations and arrangements throughout this EP are outstanding and really showcase Liam's ability to, not just set moods, but set entire scenes.
As I mentioned before, everyone will perceive this a little differently but for me, I felt that cinematic push on a lot of this stuff. Those textural and tonal layers along with emotional push and pull gave the songs their own identities and personas.
For me, I Associated a lot of it with different parts of my own life. At other points of the record, I just visualized scenes in my head that I felt the music worked with.
So, like I mentioned; this record will take you places but it's up to you as much as it is up to the music.
It's a 50/50 Road.
This was breathtaking in terms of how everything was put together and how those emotions and forms of intensities were built up and exhaled back down at certain points.
You can clearly tell there was a lot of attention to detail during the creation of this record however, it never lost those moods of personalities even once.
This was a wonderfully woven and amazingly produced record that any fan of classical orchestral, or film score music would love and appreciate.
Put some headphones on and listen to this because it's one of the best ways to soak in all of those textures.
