Handsome Midnight

For more than a decade, Twin Cities-based alternative rock outfit Handsome Midnight has been carving out a space in the indie scene, building their reputation on genre-blurring live performances that can shape-shift to fit dive bars and all-ages venues alike. Their latest single, "Piece," feels like a love letter to ‘90s alternative rock—a familiar but well-executed nod to an era when power chords and sticky melodies ruled the airwaves.

The Weezer comparisons are hard to ignore, from the punchy, downstroked guitar work to the way the vocal melodies weave into the arrangement, lodging themselves in your brain. There’s also a bit of that Fountains of Wayne charm in the song’s dynamic shifts, an understanding of how to make a chorus land just right. The vocal delivery is polished yet unfussy, and the guitar solo—thankfully—leans into its moment rather than shying away.

"Piece" doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. It’s the sound of a veteran band leaning into their strengths, embracing the hooks and heart that have kept this kind of rock alive for decades. Fans of ‘90s alt-rock will feel right at home here, and for good reason—Handsome Midnight knows exactly how to make it hit.
