A new single release from John McDines brings out a warm sentiment and tonality in the form of a folk-rock Style that brings elements of Americana, country, and some heartland rock in there too. All of this is done with such lush personality that you end up really getting attached to that the most.
"Little Bay (Home)" is a beautiful track that has some outstanding performances throughout its course. Some of these include great guitar work and soulful, bountiful vocals that express the authentic place that this track actually came from.
The song expresses a love for the place you call home. Whether you grew up there or moved there later on, there is a place that you call home if you're lucky enough, and you get a certain feeling from that.
Not everyone gets to have it, as I mentioned, but John seems to have pinpointed the feeling that it gives you to have the place you call home, and it's his lyrical descriptions and detail that really let you paint such a warm picture as the song unfolds.
Throughout this track, you can hear the influence of different genres flowing in and out of it. It does have a southern-kissed tonality to it, which again, brings out that Americana vibe but you also hear plenty of folk influence and classic rock in there at times as well.
The guitars are kind of heavy at times. There's some great Distortion and tone to them, and there are also amazing overlaying guitar lines throughout this track, performed with a brilliance that lets the song shine and certain musical hooks stick with you long after the song has ended.
This is something I adore because not all music has that anymore. When I was growing up, lots of songs had musical and guitar hooks along with memorable choruses but that doesn't seem to be the thing too much lately.
I love that John brought this back and added some guitar stuff here that served as memorable hooks and still had the same soul as the rest of the song did.
There's even an excellent guitar solo before the last chorus of the track that has plenty of heart to it.
So, it's not just the song itself; a lot of the performances, instrumentally along with the vocals, have heart to them, and that's what really drives the song.
Yes, the production is excellent. The drums have a perfect effect that lets them drive the song but is not super overpowering. The whole track feels anthemic to a certain extent and brings up a sense of nostalgia, not musically, but because of the lyrics.
The way he describes the place he calls home is beautiful. A lot of us can connect with that.
This is why the song has such an impact on me.
The country approach is pretty strong here also. You can tell there was a lot of country influence in the songwriting, and his vocals are powerful throughout this track, so they have a way of reaching out and grabbing you.
Listening to this song on record also makes me feel like seeing John McDines perform live would be pretty awesome.
There's an energy on this track that isn't really easy to capture. John pulls it off without a hitch and with charm to boot.
Because this track has some great emotional backbone, it feels kind of cinematic to me. I can picture this track in the background of a scene in a film or TV show because it has that feeling and emotional Drive.
It was beautiful and will stay with me because of its outstanding sentiment and heartfelt, soulful performances.
