A recent single release from Light Coloured Coat has a particular way of expanding as the track boasts a very experimental and slightly psychedelic approach to a rustic folk and singer-songwriter style that contains this very alluring and vast approach that at times feels scattered but also tells a very interesting story.
"Wood'n Pudd'n'" features a slew of acoustic instrumentation and an approach that feels like the whole thing was recorded live because there is this energy to it along with hints of improvisation that come into play as the song unfolds. While it all happens, you feel like you're going deeper into this rabbit hole.
I mean this in the best way possible, as the track does let you escape and has a very particular way of engulfing you and its soundscape, textures, and layers.
Along with the acoustics, there are these drawn-out and floaty sort of string-like synth pads adding a cinematic backbone and a thick atmosphere to the song which is important with this particular song because of the direction it ends up going.
You also have outstanding percussion that builds on that whole live performance feel the song delivers. It's like a group of people sitting in a room feeding off each other the whole time.
The longer you listen to this track the warmer it begins to feel and those acoustic tones in combination with the vast and stretching cinematic strings and pads really fall together well.
Throughout this whole thing, you have this layer of reverb effect that's over everything, so you do also get a slight haunt with this release too because of that effect.
There are guitars with echo and delay effects, and there are tons of really cool and sort of loose instrumentation that happens throughout the song and it all helps this feel alive and breathing.
The thing about this track is that it's completely outside the box. There is nothing cookie-cutter about it whatsoever. So, this is a piece of music that is written and released with much fewer boundaries than you may be used to, but I think that's a brilliant aspect because it was obviously made for the sake of making it.
This track was created for its own purpose not to conform to any kind of genre normalities.
That's part of the beauty of a song like this. It goes in its own directions and there are surprises around the corners because of that. There are no walls built around it as it unfolds and therefore the whole thing has a sense of freedom to it.
This is why it almost feels freeing to listen to it in a way as well.
That whole aesthetic and energy is something that's captured uniquely and I feel like this was recorded live on the spot to an extent anyway, and because of that, it's a one-shot deal.
This song can never be captured the same way it was here ever again, and I love that feeling.
This song is a whopping 7 minutes long and it does break down and become very psychedelic with loads of delays, effects, and wetness that just sort of drips from the song and it's a very interesting experience.
I think this is why I enjoy songs like this so much. Because it's more of an experience than just a song. When you listen to it you can genuinely say that you likely never heard anything exactly like this before.
You can also listen to it and no this wasn't written to be put on the radio waves. This was written because they wanted to write something freeing and without boundaries and that's exactly what we have here.
I would listen to this track with headphones on so that you can really soak it all in because there's a lot going on and a lot of notes and sounds, textures and more that float around through the heater of this track.
Take a listen to this track and see how it affects you.
