An EP release from Segmentia delivers a massive array of alternative rock, orchestral metal, and even electronic influence in the background and throughout it all you get stories and deepening characters that you end up getting attached to.
The Alone EP has a way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to, and it does so with invasive riffs and this incredible sonic drive that just leaves a mark.
This is the type of release that you listen to from beginning to end. Listening to one or two songs may give you a little gist of what you can expect but it will not give you the full spectrum of what the EP as a whole, has to offer.
This record has layers and it's really fun to peel them back. The soundscapes between the electronic synths and guitar tones along with soulful and, at times, a little bit haunting vocals is just outstanding and the whole thing creates a sort of atmosphere that you don't want to leave.
Throughout the unfolding of this EP you get hints of gothic undertone and a robust edginess that boasts a slight darkness along with it and that's part of the premise of the record because it does hit this edgy alternative rock soundscape but it also thrashes through incredible metal riffs and such in-depth and detailed arrangements that you can tell there was a lot of thought put into the creation of this record.
I absolutely adore the approach of this really because they have a really particular aesthetic that again, has a little haunt behind it and for me, it served as an amazing escape because the record can really pull you away from your surroundings and put you in these other places and other stories altogether.
To me, a lot of this record was actually sort of cinematic or theatrical even at times. Again, there is an orchestrated element to how these songs were put together and the performances of them as well so to soak this thing in feels like each song is like a chapter of a book or an act of a play.
This is something I love because you don't get it often and these guys really just nailed it.
You can hear slight influences of 90s and early 2000s metal and alternative rock in there too but really, they put a fresh spin on the whole thing with a robust atmosphere that you just end up falling into and getting washed away with.
This record was really heavy, but it was heavy in a vast way. It was graceful and expansive, so you get the feeling of being satiated when it's all over.
The whole thing is about 20 minutes long and it's well worth your time for anyone who loves heavy rock, alternative, or even melodic metal that makes you think or has a theme to it that comes through intensely.
The vocalist of this band is outstanding. She really layers on such a great attitude and her own style of swagger while making things sort of passionate and again, Soulful but men's so well with the heavy backbone of the music that it's quite beautiful all in all.
This was a killer EP that speaks volumes for Segmentia and as a fan of heavy-handed old rock in general, this was something that certainly boasted everything that you could want from the genre and more.
I would suggest listening to this record from beginning to end once again. There are stories and layers, the textures that are put together all across this record are incredible between the natural and digital instrumentation especially.
It's also important to listen to this record loud or, even better, listening to this with headphones is one of the best ways to do it honestly.
There's actually a lot going on during these tracks musically and again, not just notewise but texture wise as well. Listening to it with headphones lets you really soak in everything that's happening even out in the ethers of some of these songs.
Dive into this record as soon as you can and see how it affects you.
